NEWS

Sir,—.“Civilised News,” January 7, and “The News” of January 11, interest me. I wish to associate myself with them in regretting that evil makes better copy than good, disorder and misbehaviour better news than order and virtue. This thought was aptly illustrated in a cartoon I saw in England just before I left there two years ago; it was called, “John Bull in the News,” and left a very clear and pleasing impression that the truth is dawning. Mrs Bull looked over John’s shoulder as he read "World News,” and she asked, “Are we in.the news, John?” “No,” replied John, “Happy marriages make poor press.” That seems very true. Is there anything we can do? Perhaps we readers can only plead that you editors and journalists remember that we like to hear of the happy side no less than that of the unhappy side of life, perhaps more.—Yours, etc., LEON EDGAR MACKNEY. January 13, 1947.
