YACHTING Three sailing races were held bv the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Club at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon in a iresh north-easterly breeze and a choppy sea. Results were:— X Class, started 2.36 p.m.—Ariki (K E. Read), Imin, 4.30.25 p.m., 1; Destiny (W. Hollis), smin, 4.30.50, 2; Victory (R. Priddy), scr, 4.32.30, 3; Invader (F. Dobby), smin, 4.40.0, 4. I Class, started 2.41 p.m.—Vampire (L. Bachop), 4min, 3.52.0 p.m., 1; Valkyrie (T. Bachop), 7min, 3.53.2. 2; Zephyr (J. Sinclair), 2Jmin, 3.53.20. 3. Turi, Kowhai, and Shar-Loo were the only other starters. Z Class, started 2.46 p.m.—Toa (R. Welsh), scr. 3.40.25 p.m., 1; Echo (D. Osborne), 2min, 3.39.42, 2. The first handicap race for the Coombes Cup sailed over “C” course-by boats of the Charteris Bay Yacht Club on Sunday provided one of the best races held at the bay this season. Cf the eight boats starting at 10.18 a.m„ the five leaders after sailing for one hour 13 minutes crossed the finishing line within Imin ssec. The wind was fresh southerly and racing conditions were ideal. The final placings were:—Tamaki (B. Smart), 3min, 11.29.53 a.m., 1; Hesperus (S. Rich), Imin, 11.31.23 a.m., 2; Raeonie (W. Lindsay), Amin, 11.31.30 a.m., 3; Manly (P. Brown), scr, 11.31.48 a.m., 4. Swimming Races held by the Lyttelton Amateur Swimming Club at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternoon resulted as follows: 50 Yards Freestyle Handicap.—G. Reed (scr) 1, A. Millar (7sec) 2, A. Norton (7 sec) 3. 50 Yards Breaststroke Handicap.—A. Millar (scr) 1, A. Lewis (7sec) 2. R. Norton (3sec) 3. 33 1-3 Yards Backstroke Handicap.—A. Millar (Isec) 1; G. Reed (scr) 2, A. Lewis (4sec) 3. Dive Handicap.—G. Reed (1 point) 1, A Lewis (scr) 2, H. Hardwicke (2 points) 3.
