FOOD FOR BRITAIN CAMPAIGN

ACTIVITY IN CHRISTCHURCH The Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee reports that gifts of food and money are continuing to come in, and that further shipping space has been applied for. It is hoped to send a shipment early in the New Year in addition to that leaving this week. After the collection in the city last Friday it is now evident that the original’estimate of 10,000 tins of food will be considerably exceeded, and this is helped to a great extent by the cash donations that are being received. So far £lO9 has resulted directly from the appeal. Among sums lately to hand are:—Miss Ngaio Marsh, £2O; St. Andrew’s College, £8 16s 9d: Little River residents. £9 4s 6d (additional). Last week was a good one for counon saving in Christchurch, The totals were:—meat, 36,004 (£450 Is): butter. 1401 (700Hb). Fat collected amounted to nearly 17cwt rendered and 3&cwt raw. The Akaroa Famine Emergency Committee is also holding a drive for tinned foods. Contributions of food mav be left either at Grimwood’s or Hall’s stores.
