CONSTITUTION FOR CHINA

MARSHAL CHIANG’S REQUEST

DRAFT BY ALL PARTIES FAVOURED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) NANKING, Dec. 16. The National Assembly steering committee, at the personal request of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, vetoed all the constitutional amendments proposed by the various Assembly committees and upheld the constitution drafted, last January by the all party Political Consultative Council. The abrupt about face of the Right Wing steering committee, which pre.viously had approved the constitutional amendments, as designed to maintain the Kuomintang dictatorship, is hailed as one of Marshal Chiang’s greatest personal triumphs since he assumed leadership of the Kuomintang in 1925. It is also a triumph for the United States Ambassador (Mr J. Leighton Stuart) and General G. C. Marshall, who have been meeting almost daily with Marshal Chiang and are known to favour upholding the all party draft.
