96TH BIRTHDAY
MRS MARY STYLES Mrs Mary Styles, who has lived at Ashburton for nearly 56 years, will celebrate her ninety-sixth birthday anniversary to-day. She lives in the house in which she first made her home at Ashburton, and is still quite active for her age. Mrs Styles w r as born at Paisley, Scotland, and «was the eldest of a family of 13 children. At an early age she went to work at the carpet mills in Glasgow. When she was 19 she married Mr McCauslin, but she was left a widow with three children six years later. She came to New Zealand on the Waipa, which landed at Lyttelton 66 years ago. Ten years later she married Mr Henry Styles, who was then manager of a farm at Kaiapoi. and shortly afterwards Mr and Mrs Styles made their home at Ashburton.
