SCIENCE CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON

ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND

• The Press Special Service WELLINGTON. December 15. More than 400 scientists from all parts of New Zealand are expected to gather in Wellington next May for the first conference of the Royal Society

of New Zealand since 1935. The conference will be divided into sections, under the broad headings of physical, chemical, botanical, zoological. geological, ethnological, technological, geographical, medical, and social sciences. The scientists’ main task will be a complete stocktaking of the progress made in their subjects. Original work will also be submitted and films will be used at many of the sessions. As many of the subjects—which Include animal husbandry in the zoology section and education in the social sciences—have immediate community interest, it is probable that' several public lectures will be arranged. Normally the Royal Society’s conferences are- held at five-yearly Intervals in the main cities in rotation. The conference planned for 1940 had to be abandoned because of the war.

The Wellington section of the Royal Society is organising the conference, which will open on May 20 and close

on the night of May 23. The president will be Professor W. N. Benson. F.R.S.. of the University of Otago.
