HEAVY SNOW IN BRITAIN

POWER SUPPLIES REDUCED DELAY TO TRANSPORT SERVICES LONDON, December 16. Bitterly cold winds from Russia brought snow r frost, ice, and a record power cut to England. Snow fell in east and south-east England and the Midlands and more is. expected. London’s night temperature was 26 degrees, the lowest since January 21. Snowflakes swirled round the London morning rush hour -erowds. Kent, Weald, and East Sussex had nine inches of snow. The roads have been made difficult for transport nd many buses are ice-bound. Floods in the Rother Valley and the Romney Marshes froze over. Southern railway points froze and would not change in some places, resulting in many trains being delayed. All England and Wales is involved in the electricity cut which is 5 per cent, in north-east England, a per cent, in the north-west, and 15 pei cent, in the rest of the country. Gale warnings have been issued for sea areas. The Home Secretary (Mr Chuter Ede) was among the casualties of the bitter weather. He fell on his nose when he slipped oh an icy path while staying with Mr and Mrs Attlee at Chequers and an operation was performed. Mr Chuter Ede’s condition is now satisfactory. Paris had the season’s first snow today.
