IMMIGRANTS FOR PALESTINE

18,000 ADMITTED IN TWELVE MONTHS

‘ 10,000 IN DETENTION CAMPS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 7 p.m.) JERUSALEM, Dec. 16. A summary issued by the Palestine Government of Jewish immigration for the 12 months to December 14 says 18,000 were admitted and of these 11,299 were illegal immigrants who entered Palestine, through camps after their number was deducted from the monthly quota of 1500.

The figure included 1004 who arrived from Spezia in the spring, when American intervention secured permission for their entry after a mass hunger- strike. / The remaining 6701 admitted legally included families of former servicemen, special skilled labour categories, and 2000 immigrants from the 1939 quota. There were 10.000 illegal immigrants still detained.

The Jewish Agency office in London announced that men in the party of Jews shipwrecked on the island of Syrina would now be allowed to go to Palestine with the next quota from Cyprus, instead of waiting a considerable time. (An earlier announcement was that women and children would go immediately. while the men awaited their turn.)

In Jerusalem to-day the Palestine High Court granted representatives of the Jews detained at the Latrun detention camp an order directing the 'Government of Palestine to show cause why individuals named should be so detained. The case is to be heard before Christmas.
