PRESENTATION OF “CARMEN”
BRITISH-NEW ZEALAND CO-OPERATION ‘ This fortnight will afford a notable example of musical and cultural co-oper-ation between Britain and New Zealand. When it was decided by the Canterbury Music Festival Committee to stage Bizet’s grand opera, “Carmen,” it was found that no copies of the full score and orchestral parts were available in either New Zealand or Australia.
The secretary communicated with the British council in London, and that body willingly agreed to assist. Transport of the large body of music provided a further difficulty, but this was overcome through the good offices and generous assistance of Sir Patrick Duff, the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand The result was that more than 150 pieces of music .were sent from England and safely and promptly received in Christchurch Next week the tival Committee will open its season of grand opera with a presentation of the great work in full costume and with a splen-didly-trained and balanced chorus, a competent orchestra, a sparkling ballet and a panel of talented principals
The whole opera will be sung m English and staged in the splendid manner expected from the Canterbury Music Festival Committee. -
