MONTEZUMA ' AND LEESTON WORK WELL In spite of the heavy rain the previous evening, the No. 1 grass at Riccarton provided good easy going yesterday morning, and some good times were registered. Only a few of the horses racing at Geraldine were given work of a serious nature over more than five furlongs. Several McLean Stakes candidates were also sprinted. The best four-furlong sprint of the morning was credited to the three-year* old Leeston, which returned 50 3-ssec, He will show better form than he displayed in the John Grigg Stakes last Saturday. Over the same distance, Stately Lady, Sorry, and Jitomir got away to a flying start to record 50 4-ssec. These three maidens are not engaged at Geraldine. Golden Souvenir and Bruce took 51 1- for four furlongs. Irish Note, which is now getting in something like racing condition, took 53 2-ssec. His stablemate Blue Trout was well held to return 54sec. Denim, a candidate for the maiden event at Geraldine, ran four furlongs in i5l 3-ssec. Another candidate. Victory Bells, in company with the Nightly— Shanghai Lily gelding in V. A. Lee’s stable, took 52 2-ssec. Later over the same ground Wild Knock beat Palanthus (Man’s Pal— Dian thus) by three-quarters of a length in 51sec. Korohah and Detain finished together in 52 2- and Tomahawk came home over his last four furlongs in 52sec. Three of R. Wilson’s two-year-olds sprinted four furlongs. Renowned, by Beaulivre from Cuddle, finished well clear of Eminence, by Coronach from Peerless, in 51 l-ssec. Renowned also had the worse of the weights. The Balloch—Catrine filly Loch Lennox took 53sec, In one of the best gallops of the morning, Montezmua ran five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec, the last half in 50 l-ssec. She was stopping in the last 50 yards, but went very well. She is in good order, and the track conditions were to her tilting. Bittersweet was always going easily down the straight to beat Desert Victory by half a length at the end of mile in Imin 46sec. They went fast early, but took 54 2-ssec for the last half. Bittersweet has been nominated for the Wingatui meeting. Honest Sal was too good for Philary at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 32sec, the last half in 51 2-ssec. Over the same distance Springwater was too gpod for Lord Robin, taking Imin 34 l-ssec after running the first three furlongs' in 38 Over the six furlongs, Spiora got the better of the start and beat Gay Joy in Imin 20 3-ssec, the last half in 53 l-ssec. Spiora is very fast over the first few furlongs, and on a turning track at Geraldine may give ■ good account of herself in her flrst start for the season.
