MAORI WAR EFFORT
from “War Effort”: “Mr P. K. Paikea joined the Cabinet in January, 1941, as Minister in charge of the Maori war effort. Following his death he was succeeded by the Hon. E. T. Tirikatene.” Can you tell me if this is correct. and if so, when Mr Tirikatene was appointed Minister in charge of the Maori war effort? My impression is that on the death of Mr Paikea this particular Cabinet post was taken over by the Prime Minister himself and was not entrusted to the member for Southern Maori.—Yours, etc., CURIOUS. September 13, 1946. [An official of the Prime Minister’s Department says that the booklet does not explain the position clearly. On Mr Paikea’s death he was succeeded as a member of the Executive Council representing the native race by Mr Tirikatene. Mr Fraser, however, took over the position of Minister in charge of the Maori war effort. On the passage of the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Act, this organisation was taken Over by the Native Department under the administration of the Native Minister (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason).]
