WIVES OF U.S. SERVICEMEN
DEFENCE IN DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS
GOVERNMENT OFFERS HELP
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) said to-day that reports had been made to him that in some cases divorce proceedings had been initiated by United States servicemen who were married to New Zealanders at present residing in New Zealand, and that difficulties had arisen where the wives concerned desired to defend the actions.
Information was not available to determine where tjie actions had been commenced, but New Zealand wives of United States servicemen who had evidence that actions for divorce were contemplated or had been commenced should communicate with the Undersecretary of Justice, Wellington, who would, if desired, advise the best course to follow to defend the action. If the circumstances warranted, steps would be taken through the New Zehlancr Minister in Washington to ensure effective presentation of the wife’s case during Court proceedings.
