OBITUARY

MRS G. DASH

Mayoress of Waimate for a total period of 18 years, Mrs George Dash, ’whose death occurred last week at the age of 76 years, was in office during two years of the 1914-18 war, and concluded. her second term two years after the outbreak of the last war. She took an active part in war work, including the activities of the Lady Galway Guild and the Red Cross Society. Mrs Dash, who was a daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Stevenson, was born in Waimate district, and her marriage to Mr George Dash took place in 1901. She was a member of the Girl Guide movement, the Waimate -Ladies’ Benevolent Society, the Plunket Society, the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Women’s Institute, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and of temperance societies and the Prohibition League. She gave hospitality at her home to visitors from all parts of New Zealand and from overseas countries who came to speak on questions of social reform. Mrs Dash is survived by her husband and one son, Mr Hugh Dash, of Palmerston North. The funeral was one of the largest seen in Waimate for years.

Sister E. A. Rose, of the Southland Hospital, has been appointed lady superintendent of the Waipukuraii Hospital. Children’s underwear was practically unprocurable in Canada, said Mrs A. The Auckland City Council, at its meeting last Friday, appointed Dr. Barbara Roche, of Remuera, to fill the vacancy on the council caused by the recent death of Miss Ellen Melville. Dr. Roche is a daughter of the late Mr J. B. Henry, who was manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Auckland before his retirement in 1928, and was formerly stationed at Greymouth. She was born in Greymouth and was educated at the Marsden School, Wellington, and later at the Otago Medical School, when she tbok the degrees of M. 8., Ch.B. Since 1930 Dr. Roche has lived in Auckland, where she married Dr. E. H. Roche, of Remuera. Foi* the last five years she has been an anaesthetist on the staff of the Auckland Hospital. She is this year’s president of the Auckland Women’s Medical Association.
