EQUIPMENT FOR RAILWAYS
N.Z. PURCHASES FROM BRITAIN £3,000,000 WORTH (Special Correspondent N.Z.PA.) LONDON, August 19. Two important contracts, representing an expenditure of approximately £3.000,000, for the purchase of British electrical and other railway rolling stock, spares, and equipment, were negotiated by Mr F. R. Angus, chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand Railways Department, and Mr F. W. Aickin, representing the general manager, during their present visit to Britain. Both contracts have now been signed on behalf of the New Zealand Government by the High Commissioner (the Rt. Hon. W. J. Jordan). The larger of the two contracts, which embraces an expenditure of approximately £2,000,000, is for the purchase of all the rolling stock necessary to carry out the complete electrification of the Wellington metropolitan railway services as far as Upper Hutt The second contract, which is divided between three British suppliers, is for the purchase of 3000 open steel railway waggons, and it represents an expenditure of approximately £1,000.000 ' First deliveries of the new equipment w|ll take place in January, 1948, and thereafter at agreed delivery dates.
