BUTTER RATION

ASSURANCE OF NO INCREASE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 19. An assurahce that the butter ration in New Zealand would not be increased while Britain was short of fats was given by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), answering Mr A. S. Sutherland (Opposition, Hauraki) in the House of Representatives. Mr Fraset said no suggestion of that kind had been mstde in any quarter as far as hfe was aware. The resolution of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union suggested nothing of the kind, but a direct reference to the diversion of some butter from Britain to the United States. Apparently the inference was drawn erroneously that, in the circumstances of less butter being sent to Britain, the urgency of the need must have decreased. The fatt that an equivalent amount of fats had to be made available for the people of Britain before the British Government could possibly agree to th& sale of the butter to the United States had apparently hot been appreciated. . -
