OPERA SINGER’S DEATH
MISS KATE CAMPION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 22. Mrs Catherine Taylor, formerly the opera singer Kate Campion, died tonight, aged 62. Her husband is Mr Edward Taylor, of Parnell. Born in Minnesota, Miss Campion came to New Zealand as a girl, and acting on advice from Madame Calve, who toured New Zealand in 1911, she studied in England and also in Paris. She joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company, and appeared in Covent Garden in leading roles in “Madame Butterfly,” “Tales of Hoffman,” and “11 Pagliacci.” She also created the part of Amy Robsart in Isadore de Lara’s opera, and sang before the Prince of Wales in 1922. After her return to New Zealand in 1923 Miss Campion gave several recitals, and sang at the Dunedin exhibition in “Il Trovatore” and “Tannhauser.” She sang for the Wellington
Choral Society, and appeared several times with the Auckland Choral Society. In 1932 she toured Australia and later broadcast in New Zealand.
