APPOINTMENT OF SURGEONS

CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL Dr. D. G. Radcliffe, 0.8. E., Dr. D. E. Orchard, and Dr. H. E. H. Denham were appointed assistant surgeons on the part-time staff of the Christchurch Hospital by the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday on the recommendation of the medical appointments advisory committee. Four other applications were received, including those of two young Christchurch doctors and that of Mr J. J. Brownlee. Mr Brownlee, in a covering letter, explained that he wished, if appointed, to do reparative surgery. He was leaving for England shortly for three months to investigate this type of work and, if he were appointed, he would require three months’ leave of absence. Miss M. McLean asked whether the committee recommended the appointment of the best men, or whether it gave any consideration to giving promising young Canterbury doctors the opportunity of getting experience. She noticed that two of those who were not recommended for appointment were young Christchurch. doctors. Sir Hugh Acland said the committee’s only concern was to select those whose appointment would be in the best interests of patients, taking into account the work they would be required to do. Mrs J. N. Clarke asked why Mr Brownlee, whose name had been mentioned at the last meeting when it was decided to invite fresh applications, had not been recommended for appointment. Sir Hugh Acland said that a new application had been received, that of Dr. Radcliffe, who had high qualifications.
