CRICKET IN ENGLAND
INDIAN TEAM OPENS TOUR (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 6. The Indian cricketers opened their tour of England promisingly when they led Worcester by one run on the first innings. Scores:— Worcester: first innings 191 (Singleton 47: Mankad, four for 26). India: first innings 192 (Modi 34, Nawab of Pataudi 29; Perks, five for 53). Worcester: second innings, six wickets for 230 runs (Howorth 105; Mankad, four for 61). Results of county cricket were:— Lancashire, first innings, 310; Cambridge University, first innings, 171 (Willat 96: Roberts, five for 18). Lancashire, second innings, four wickets for 125 runs.
Surrey: first innings, 364. M.C.C.: first innings 152; second innings 78 (Bedser six for 14). Surrey won by an innings and 134 runs, Gloucester: first innings 481 for seven wickets declared. Oxford University: first innings 147 (Goddard six for 59); second innings, 185 (Goddard three for 53). Gloucester, won by an innings and 149 runs. The New Zealander, M. P. Donnelly, scored 35 in the first innings and 25 in the second innings for Oxford. The New Zealand fast bowler, T. Pritchard, who is on the Warwickshire staff, has been engaged by the Smethwick Cricket Club in the Birmingham League, as a professional. An application for Pritchard’s registration as a county player has been refused by the M.C.C.
