USE OF CANE BY HEAD PREFECT
DECISION OF NELSON COLLEGE GOVERNORS -The Pre..** Special Service NELSON. Ma.V ’■ The principle o£ the head prelect a Nelson College having authority administer limited corporal puna® ment wes adhered to by the Ne > College Council ot Governors at w | monthly meeting, but it favoured an I amendment to the present practice j respect of a boy’s right to exercise Ins preference for punishment to be a ministered by the duty master or headmaster, rather than by the P feet. t The general principle of the use the cane by the head prefect arose during a discussion in committee onreport by the headmaster of the co - lege iMr H. V. Searle). It stated thai since 1933 the use of the cane by prefects had been restricted to the hea prefect only, with a maximurn of two strokes. Any boy had the right of P peal to the headmaster on the ps' ness of the punishment, or to exp _ a preference for the caning to be c ried out by the headmaster. Tins tem retained for prefects some authority in the carrying put of tneu duties, and at the same time ensuren justice for the boys. It also obvi the necessity for boys to appear fore the headmaster for any but se ous offences. This arrangement na been appreciated by most boys, well as by the headmaster. A motion that the head pref ra j not allowed to administer corpor punishment, and that any pun shm e J { more severe than the a®*l"’'"masfatigues be referred to the d ’ l '\ s t ter or the headmaster, was defeated the board meeting.
