ROAD ACCIDENTS
TOTAL OF 15 DEATHS LAST MONTH During the four months of this year, 64 persons were killed in New Zealand road accidents. This according to information supplied by the Transport Department, is exactly twice the number of deaths for the corresponding period last year. Fifteen deaths occurred during April this year, Compared with five in April, 1945. Of the persons killed last month, five were occupants of motor vehicles, three were riding motor-cycles, three were on bicycles, and four were pedestrians. Five of the accidents occurred in the South Island.
Commenting on these figures, the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) said that 10 of the fatal accidents last month occurred either after dark or at dusk.
“Everyone using roads during the hours ot darkness, whether at the wheel, cycling, or on foot, should be doubly cautious,” he said. “With the shortening of daylight hours, many people will be leaving for work and returning home in the dark during the next few months. These hours have in previous years been found to be potentially hazardous, and added care is the ope effective remedy.”
