DEFENCE PROBLEMS DISCUSSED DOMINION MINISTERS’ CONFERENCE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ... LONDON, May 6. ine Dominion Ministers’ conference to-day was again devoted to the defence of the south-west Pacific. The results of the discussions are being transmitted to Mr Bevin in Paris for his talks with Mr Byrnes about American bases in the Pacific, on which they have already carried out a preliminary exchange of views. The Ministers will adjourn on Wednesday until May 20, when the Prime Minister of Canada (Mr W. L. MackenZl ® King) will join in the discussions. Before leaving by air for Washington and Tokyo, on his way to Ausa» the Australian Prime Minister (Mr J. B. Chifley) said that he attached great importance to economic co 7 operation among members of the Empire and Great Britain and to the setting up of a centre of Pacific studies Australia. Mr Chifley will call on Mr Truman in Washington and will also see General MacArthur in Tokyo on his way home. During the remainder of the talks, Australian Minister of External Affairs (Dr. H. V. Evatt) will represent Australia.
