STOCK SALES

RANGIORA Yardings were small in. all sections at the weekly Rangiora stock market yesterday. Prices were as follows: Sheep.—Ewe lambs, 20s; weather lambs, 17s. Cattle.—Dairy cows. £l2 10S; heifers, £l5. Pigs.—Weaners. 12s to 16s; stores, 295. ASHBURTON With a shortage in the entry of prime quality fat sheep, prices at the Ashburton stock market yesterday rose from 3s to 4s a head on recent rates, which have been fairly constant for some weeks. Butchers’ ewes ranged up to 20s for light quality, from 23s to 25s for medium, and from 26s to 29s lOd for prime quality. Two-tooth ewes sold from 27s 4d to 36s 3d. The top price for wethers (49s Id) was unusually high, and several lots went above the 45s mark. Fat ambs of light weight brought from 22s 6d. mediums from 25s to 31s, and heavy stock as high as 37s 6d. The only entry in the cattle pens, a fat cow, sold for £l2 7s 6d. LORN EVILLE (P.A.) INVERCARGILL. May 7. There were smaller entries of sheep at Lorneville to-day, but cattle showed a considerable increase. Wet weather affected the attendance of buyers. Fat sheep.—The entry of 750 was 140 lower than last week, and consisted almost wholly of wethers, most of which were only medium and inferior. Ewes were in very short supply, and were mostly of freezing quality only. Compared with last week, wethers were firmer by about 2s a head, but ewes were almost unchanged.
