ELECTRIFICATION OF RAILWAYS
SYDNEY’S TRAFFIC PROBLEMS RELIEVED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 7. The extensive electrification of the railways in the Sydney metropolitan area had greatly relieved traffic problems and congestion, said Mr W. R. Beaver, a prominent Sydney engineer interviewed this morning. He recently arrived as a member of the Royal Commission investigating the Auckland trans-harbour traffic, the sittings of which will begin next week. Mr Beaver said that in Sydney the suburban railway system was now entirely electric for distances up to 21 miles and it was proposed to extend it to 140 miles, at least, in three directions. He added that cheap steel from Newcastle and Port Kembla had played a most important part in Australia’s war effort and would be a considerable factor in the industrial progress which was now rapid.
