GOLF

MIXED FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP

BLANK AND MISS HUDSON WIN TITLE

By winning, with Miss Z. Hudson, the Canterbury amateur mixed foursome golf championship at Waitiklri yesterday. A. R. Blank became the holder of three Canterbury titles. Earlier he won the men’s foursomes, with R. D. Frizzell, and at Shirley at Easter he won the Canterbury championship. The win obtained by Blank and Miss Hudson was a meritorious one, although at one stage in the second round they were in real difficulties, and seemed likely to return a scorer nearer 90 than 80. However, birdie fours at the fifteenth and seventeenth holes enabled them to escape with an 84, and they won the title by three strokes

The course was in fine order for the tournament, although the greens, which had plenty of grass* on them, were a little on the slow side. There was a good entry, most of the province’s low handicap pjayers taking part. In the morning Blank and Miss Hudson played extremely good golf to return a 78, four over the winter standard scratch score for the course. They scored birdies at two of the three long holes on the way out, to turn for home in 38, two ever par. Steady golf on the second, half, and a birdie four at the seventeenth, “The Gap” (430 yards) gave them a 40, again two over par. L. A,. Watson and Mrs W. Toomey, with halves of 39 and 42, were in second place after the morning round. D. L. Woon and Miss L. Johnstone were out in 38, but they took 46 for the last nine, to finish the morning in sixth place, six strokes behind the leaders. M. R. Blank and Miss E. WhiteParsons played steadily, but a six at the last. “Home” (375 yards), gave them an 82 In the afternoon Blank and Miss Hudson again began very well. A par four at the first was followed by a fine birdie four at the second, “Three Oaks” (420 yards/ At the fourth. "The Comer” (400 yards). Miss Hudson got into the trees and they took a six. At the 420-yard (par five) sixth, “Sedge,” a good drive by Blank and a fine second by Miss Hudson gave them a birdie four. Miss Hudson was most accurate off the tees, but she pushed her drive out a little at the seventh, “The Knoll” (405 yards), and they took six. Blank appeared to be striving for extra distance when he duffed his drive at the tenth, “Poplar” (370 yards) Miss Hudson had to find the fairway and although Blank’s third had plenty of length, it went into the bunker at the right of the green, from which Miss Hudson failed to recover. Blank, however, played a remarkable shot from beneath a steep bank at the edge of the bunker, but the hole cost them seven. Blank missed a very short putt at the next, which took them six, 1 one over par, and when he put his tee shot over the fence at the short fourteenth, "Target,” they appeared to have lost their grip on the championship. At the fifteenth. "A.R.B ” (425 yards), however, Blank played a magnificent brassie second te the edge of the green, and they were down in a birdie four. They obtained an unexpected birdie at the 430-yard seventeenth. “The Gap.” Miss Hudson’s drive was off the line for once and Blank, with the green obscured by the trees at the left, had to play out on to the fairway. A fine third by Miss Hudson and a very good putt by Blank completed a remarkable recovery.

M. R Blank and Miss E. White-Parsons, whose afternoon round of 83 gave them second place, were out in 39 in the afternoon. Trouble on the homeward half, however, culminated in another six at the eighteenth. Miss White-Parsons was in gooc’ form, although she was consistently short on the holding greens. The lonjMiitting I B. Cromb and Miss H Buchanan had the best afternoon round. 82, and it took them into third place.
