DISTRIBUTION OF HERRINGS
SMALL SUPPLY CAUSES DIFFICULTY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 5. Consisting of 1600 cartons, the Auckland share of the shipment of tinned herrings that arrived in New Zealand from Britain recently is in the opinion of grocers too small to be handled without causing ,a great deal of work and unpleasantness. Each grocer in the Auckland province has been allotted one and a quarter cartons, giving him 60 tins to distribute among his customers. Retailers feel that rationing of the supply, which will be the only possible method of distribution, will cause trouble and that they will be accused of favouritism by customers who do not get a tin. “Grocers are fed up with shortages and rationing, and some of them will possibly refuse to handle the herrings, if only to keep these customers,” said Mr R. M. Barker, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Master Grocers* Association. “The public does not seem to realise that the shortage of stock is worse than at any time during the war.”
Herrings packed in 14oz tins would be sold retail at 2s 2d in the city and 2s 3d in the country. Mr Barker added that further supplies would probably arrive in the future.
