SHEEP DOG TRIALS

RECORD ENTRIES AT WAIKARI The Wgikari CoUle Club held Its fortyninth annual sheep deg trials last week on Mr K. D. Anderson's “Braemyle” prpperty at Waikari. The trials extended over four days commencing on Wednesday morning and concluding on Saturday afternoon. Bright sunshine prevailed throughout the meeting, and there was a good gallery of spectators on each day. A record tc-tal of 282 entries had been received this year, but some of these had been made conditionally and the recent long spell of foggy weather in the high country has so delayed wbrk that a number of would-be competitors were unable to attend. The prevalence bt distemper in some areas also affected the number of entries and scratchings. The Waikari Ccliie Club will be holding its jubilee ffials in 1947, and the increased entr.es and greater public interest this year promise well for a record jubilee meeting. District dogs, always a feature at Waikari, again figured prominently in the prize-money, but with stronger competition from .more competitors, they - did iW'Ttoegfcttre-sweeping success that was a feature of last year s trials. The smooth working of the long four-day programme was again a tribute to the club’s efficient organisation. The sheep for the trials were halfbred wethers supplied by the president. Mr B. G. Rutherford, of Macdonald Downs, and the judges were Mr E. M. Relph (heading classes), and Mr C. A. Parker (huntaway classes).
