MEAT STRIKE IN AUSTRALIA
SETTLEMENT IN SYDNEY LIKELY (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) ' SYDNEY, May 3. While it is expected that the Sydney meat strike will be declared off tomorrow, unless there is a last-minute hitch, and meat will be available to the public on Wednesday, the situation in Brisbane is not so promising. The Brisbane Trades and Labour Council has decided to recommend to a meeting of Queensland strikers to-day that the order by the State Industrial Court for a return to work on May 15 should be rejected. The Court’s order provided for a return to work under award conditions. - In Brisbane the main difficulties of the strikers have been that they have no means of stopping either the use of volunteer labour or the obtaining by retailers of meat from other sources. The result is that the shops have never been completely deprived of meat.
