BUILDINGS FOR UNIVERSITY
PURCHASE FROM U.S. FORCES TEMPORARY STRUCTURES Students in some departments of Canterbury University College may soon be working in quarters which a few months ago housed American soldiers in distant bases in the Pacific. All-steel buildings including some huts destined for Canterbury University College, are included in a list of purchases recently comoleted by a New Zealand mission which toured American bases as far away as Guam. Manus, and Saipan. All bf the buildings are to be used for public purposes, mostly for educational work. The University of Otago. Victoria University College, and the Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln will benefit in the same way as Canterbury College . Altogether the buildings will provide hundreds of thousands of square feet in educational institutions.
The buddings to be used at Canterburv College, it is stated, are not intended to remain in use any longer then is needed to provide permanent buildings. It is estimated, however, that their construction and materials p!”) so stron<* that, with attention, they will have a life of from 20 to 30 years At Canterbury College the new
buildings will, it is understood, be used to provide much-needed classroom accommodation for several departments. including that of geography. The buildings, of steel, stand as separate units, but can, if desired, be built together.
It is stated that the buildings were bought, at what is regarded as a “bargain price,” from the United States Army authorities. Those to come to Canterbury College and to the Agricultural College at Lincoln are understood to be part of a quota earmarked for the purpose by the Education Department.
