THE WAIKATO CLAIMS
Sir, —I congratulate both the political and tribal leaders of the Waikato Maoris, because they have shown that they were not out to feather their own nests; and, like thoroughbred rangitiras in thought and deed, they did not throw up the sponge by getting bluffed to take half a loaf, but fought on forever, until they secured the rich fruits of their lands for the tribes which placed their trust and honour in their hands. Such men and women are few, but exceedingly great; and will ever command the highest respect of both races. The Government has
richly rewarded the Waikato Maoris, because they did not fawn for personal favours. There is now no discontent or disgust among these people over their claim, end good luck to them; because they have won handsome provision for their offspring—forever.—Yours, etc., NGATI-HUIRAPA. May 3, 1946.
