FRANCE AND CHINA
NEW TERRITORIAL TREATY
(Rec. 7 p.m.) CHUNGKING. Feb. 28. France has officially relinquished extra-territorial rights in China by treaty. China, in return, has agreed to withdraw troops from northern French Indo-China, The treaty, which removes one more sore spot from the troubled Orient, was signed by the Chinese Foreign Minister (Dr. Wang Shih Chieh) and the French Ambassador (M. Jacques Meyrier). Dr. Wang said China had sent troops to French Indo-China at the request of General MacArthur to accept the surrender of the Japanese, out the French were now ready to accept the responsibility for repatriating the Japanese and protecting Chinese nationals. China, therefore had decided to recall her troops by March 31. “I cannot conceal the fact that the Chinese are sympathetic toward the national aspirations of the Indo-Chinese. My Government earnestly bones that a fair settlement will be sought by all the parties concerned,” he added.
