DEATH SENTENCE ON JAPANESE
ILL-TREATMENT OF PRISONERS
(Rec. 7 p. m ) SINGAPORE, Feb. 28. The War Crimes Court has sentenced to death by shooting the Japanese General Fukei Shimpel. He was found guilty of being concerned with the killing of two British and two Australian prisoners, with being concerned with, ill-treating other prisoners of war, and with trying to compel prisoners to sign pledges not to attempt to escape. The President of the Court, announcing the sentence, said the Court, in face of all the evidence it had heard, was not prepared to make any recommendation for mercy. A United States Military Court in Shanghai has sentenced to death five Japanese soldiers, including MajorGeneral Masataka Kaburagi. former deputy commander of the 34th Army for strangling three American flyers, vzhose Superfortresses crashed near Hankow in December. 1944. The Court sentenced 18 other Japanese soldiers to up to 20 years’ imprisonment for complicity. The flyers were dragged through the streets of Hankow, clubbed, and strangled with cords.
