BOTANIC GARDENS. Cuningham House contains an inter esting variety of tropical foiiag e anq flowering plants, including ““S' °! economic value. In Townend Hou tuberous begonias and fuchsias present a mass display of flowers in a wide range of colours, and ornamental foliaged coleus are features. Beds oi zonal pelargoniums, antirrhinums, ana salvias have materially bene ft\ e< recent rain, while zinnias, P etun1 *®’ phlox drummondii and dahlias are flowering freely. Water lilies in many colours are also flowering freely m the bog garden. Colourful autumn flowering cyclamen, crocus and gentians make a bright display in the rock garden. A specimen of tsuga ajbertiana (western hemlock), a native fir tree of Canada, is situated on ths north side of the archery lawn opposite the sun-dial. The hemlock » used chiefly in the manufacture wood PUlp and as an ornamental tree it is valuable. Its graceful drooping branchlets and spire-topped crown take the place of spruce, which in many places in Canterbury cannot be grown.
