GREYMOUTH J.C.

TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, - February ■ 14. Tlie Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting will open at the. Omoto racecourse on Saturday, concluding on Monday, when good fields are set down to parade. The track and appointments are in good order and the club should have a most successful meeting, particularly as Monday is a public holiday in celebration of the anniversary of the province. Royal Tor, a winner in her last five starts, should be a distinct favourite in the principal event, the Hannon Memorial, while there should also be support for Atreus, Gunga Din, Prince Leighon, Record Voyage. Bitter Sweet, and Trench Law, the field actually being a fairly well-balanced one, all of the above-mentioned being form horses, with recent successes on the circuit. The win-and-place totalisator will operate and the following should be prominent in their respective engagements:— 12.30 p.m.—Novice Stakes: First Divis-ion-Fluorescent, Deep Harmony, Royal Event. Second Division—Cornucopia, Prana, Mercia’s Mystery. 1.15 p.m.—Mawhera Trot: Darkle Grattan, Iron Bar, Calumet Pointer. 155 p.m.—Stewards’ Hack: Betfort, Lost Art, Olga's Choice. 2.35 p.m—Hannan Memorial: Royal Tor Gunga Din, Prince Leighon. 3.15 p.m.—Flying Handicap: Rout. Prince Leighon, Hamish. TURFGOSSIP Banks Peninsula Racing Club Nominations for all events at the summer meeting to be held at Motukarara on March 2 will close at 5 p.m. to-day. —Advt. Change of Trainer Whakcie, Air Lord, and Desert Victory, owned by Mr E. B. Rawlings, are now being trained by R. E. Humphries at Mr Rawlings’s stable at Yaldhurst. Booked for Trentham The Chokebore two-year-old Wide Range, which attracted attention by his third placing at Riccarton, is to be taken to the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting next month. For Steeplechasing Treasurer has been recommissioned by H. Nurse after a long spell, and is to be got ready for steeplechasing during the winter. A Smart Hurdler Tatting is now in G. Barr’s stable at Riccarton, and will be an interesting candidate for hurdle events later in the year. He showed brilliance in his little racing last season. Off the Scene Sunny Course suffered a severe injury when he struck himself in the running of the Mandeville Hack Handicap at Gore and, according to a veterinary opinion, it will be six months before he will be able to race again. A Poison Victim Rhine Lord was galloped on during the New Year racing and developed a poisoned leg. The poison went right through his system and he fell away in condition. This half-brother to Royal Lancer is on the mend again, and is at present spelling. Repatriated All the good French thoroughbreds acquired by the German invaders were not converted into horseflesh. Many have been recovered and returned to France, among them the champion of his time, Brantone. Though too old now for racing, they will have considerable stud value. A Punter’s Fall The Victoria Racing Club’s committee will be called upon to decide a fine point when it deals with a complaint of bookmakers that Mr Harry Guinsberg, of Queensland, has not legally honoured his debts to. bookmakers. Mr Guinsberg, a clothing manufacturer and racehorse owner, went to Melbourne for the spring campaign. It is stated that he has admitted making losing bets totalling £16,000 in one day at Moonee Valley. Mr Guinsberg is said to have made an arrangement by which certain bookmakers accepted 5s in the £. He says that was in full settlement—that the 5s in the £ wiped the slate clean, so that he could start again. Some of those who received the 5s in the £ say, however, that this was merely an instalment of the full amount, and that the balance would be remitted later—when he got back to h’is garment factory in Brisbane. The complaint will probably be considered at the committee’s next meeting on February 15. “It is'true that the committee has been asked to Investigate a complaint of alleged defaulting,” the secretary of the V.R.C., Mr A. V. Kewney, told a Melbourne paper. A Winning Pair The Defoe five-year-old gelding Sir Raleigh won against the high-weight horses at Otaki with a good deal in hand. It was his third success in six starts this season, and even though the race was not a true test of stamina, he created the impression that he could have won with another stone in weight. He is owned by Mr N. Clout, of Levin, who has experienced an excellent run of late with his other representative, Peter Robinson. Incidentally, Peter Robinson is still at Levin, and it would appear negotiations for his sale to Australia have fallen through. Fleet Street Returns Fleet Street was permitted to go out at a false price in the Croydon Handicap at Gore, arid after following Ring Chief to the straight he came on to win decisively, says the “Southland Times." Green Note was placed behind the field and lost a couple of lengths at the start, while Sing Sing and Crinkle were also slow away. Ring Chief took charge within the first furlong and led along the back Gamble, Fleet Street, and Bonny Flight. Ring Chief was first into the straight from Fleet Street, Crinkle, Gamble, Bonny Flight, Lyndall, and Green Note. Fleet Street shot to the front at the distance and went on to win decisively. Lyndall finished fast from the back to beat Gamble by a length for second. Sing Sing came with a great late run to be right up in fourth place, ahead of Bonny Flight, Crinkle, and Green Note, with Ring Chief last.
