HIGHWAY THROUGH THE PARK

Sir, —Members of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (Inc.), Canter-bury-Westland branch, at a recent general meeting, discussed the report of the special committee of the Chamber of Commerce, favouring a highway through Hagley Park as Canterbury’s centennial memorial. Members were unanimously opposed to any such proposal and expressed their approval of your article dated February 9. They considered that the proposed highway is n,ot only quite unnecessary but would be definitely prejudicial to the peace and safety of users of .the park. Readers will be interested to learn that the proposed highway from Deans avenue to Cathedral square would be only 220 yards shorter than the magnificent approach via Riccarton avenue. Why spoil the. best park in New Zealand to save 15 seconds? The present proposal savours of vandalism, and citizens must be on their guard to save the park from despoliation.—Yours, etc., A. R. SHERRIS, February 14, 1946. President.
