SUPPORT GIVEN DON JUAN
GROUP OF LEADING SPANIARDS
PUBLIC STATEMENT (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 13. A group of 450 leading Spaniards has sent a document to Don Juan, the Pretender to the, Spanish throne, supporting restoration of the monarchy. This, says Reuter’s Madrid correspondent, is the biggest public statement in favour of the monarchy since the inception of the Republic. The signatures included those of 20 former Cabinet Ministers,, the chairmen of five of the biggest Spanish banks, shipowners, businessmen, members of the liberal professions, professors, writers, and journalists.
A Spanish Embassy spokesman at Lisbon said negotiations between General Franco and Don Juan had only just begun and were likely to be very protracted, says the Lisbon correspondent of “The Times.” The spokesman said the Spanish Ambassador at Lisbon (Don Nicholas Franco), who had gone to Madrid, would undoubtedly discuss monarchist developments with General Franco, but the journey had not been undertaken specially on Don Juan’s account.
