SWIMMING

CANTERBURY CENTRE •‘When they were first put up, there might have been something artistic in the arrangement; now they are nothing but an eyesore,” said a club delegate at a meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre last evening when protesting that the ferns which hung over the Christchurch tepid baths obstructed the view of spectators when diving contests were being held Members said the ferns still had some decorative effect, and if they were raised a few feet instead of being discarded altogether there would be no reason for complaint. It was decided to ask the City Council to have the ferns raised above the line, of vision of spectators. Mr N. H. Macdonald said the expense of a trip to the New Zealand championships was going to impose a hardship on some young swimmers for the centre would pay only travelling expenses and members would have to make their own arrangements for board. He had heard complaints, and he did not like the idea of young fellows cunning into debt because of such a trip. The boy» were under the impression that they would have a'free trip to Napier and back. Mr Macdonald moved that a charge be made on the clubs to assist swimmers taking part in the championships. Miss D. Brown said that at previous championship meetings nearly all swimmers paid their own expenses, and in recent years the Canterbury Centre was the only one to pay all actual travelling expenses If members of the championship team \yere prepared to do something for themselves the centre would be behind them. Mr Macdonald’s motion was lost.
