FOOD POISONING AT WESTPORT
TEN PERSONS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL
Members of a party from Waimangaroa attending a picnic at Charleston on Sunday were taken ill suddenly and rushed to the Buller District Hospital for treatment. Some of the party were in worse condition than others and all were apparently suffering the effects of poisoning, evidently as the result of something eaten at lunch. Those admitted to hospital were Mary Moseley (aged 13 years), Jean Moseley (14), Noelene Hawes (14), Jack Moseley, Richard Hawes, and William Hawes, all of Waimangaroa. With the exception of Noeline Hawes, they were discharged from the hospital yesterday, morning. Four members of a Westport household were also admitted tc the hospital on Sunday afternoon suffering from food poisoning. They had eaten food procured from the same source as the picnic party Those admitted were Mrs Mary Ward, wife of Mi T. Ward, of the Social Security Department; Mrs Mary Morrow vChristchurch), mother of Mrs Ward; Mark Ward, aged two years, son of Mr ana Mrs Ward; and Mr Leslie Mew, accountant at the Westport Post Office. Mrs Morrow was discharged yesterday morning, and the others are still in hospital. Their condition yesterday was reported to be satisfactory. Other cases of sickness were reported yesterday, but were not serious enough for admission to hospital. The Health Department’s inspector at Westport (Mr H. Knight) is investigating the source of the supply of the foodstuff suspected of causing the sickness.
