GREEK WORKERS DEMAND FOOD
THREAt OF GENERAL STRIKE DISSATISFACTION OVER WAGES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 6. “Greek workers, instead of demanding a readjustment of wages in terms of drachma, now insist on payment in foodstuffs or their counterpart at present prices,” says Reuter’s correspondent in Athens. “The threat of a general strike, which has been hanging over Greece for the last week, was brought closer at a meet.ng of representative workers in Athens to-day, when a tragic picture was drawn of conditions throughout Greece. Labour leaders reported that four worker* had died of hunger at Kelamata. in Peloponnesus, ana that 132 vvurkers were incapacitated by lack of vitamins at the Thracian port of Kava Ila
“The speakers contended that’ the present wages represented less than 10 per cent, of the pre-war wages. They declared that there were 70,000 persons without work ih the Athens and Piraeus area, representing 80 per cent, of the total employed in the area before the war.”
