SAILOR LOST OVERBOARD
—_♦— ACCIDENT ON H.M.S. INDEFATIGABLE
FRUITLESS SEARCH BY DESTROYER
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 12. The loss of a man overboard in the Hauraki Gulf on Tuesday gave a sad ending to H.M.S. Indefatigable's cruise from Picton to Auckland. He was drowned before a boat could reach him, and his body was not recovered.
Driving rain squalls and a short, steep sea met the Indefatigable as-she entered the gulf. The seaman who was lost was trying to haul a tarpaulin over a boat to cover it from the rain. The tarpaulin was stubborn, and the sailor gave it an extra hard pull. It yielded so suddenly that he lurched backward and went over the side. The destroyer Wizard stopped in her attempt a rescue. The Wizard later signalled she had both seen and heard the sailor,. She lowered a whaler and sent it to the area where the sailor had been sighted. However, he had disappeared when the boat reached that point, and a prolonged search failed to find him.
