RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC SERVICE

PRESENTATION TO MR READ MASTERS

Mr.Read Masters, superintendent of the telephone exchange at the Chief Post Office, Christchurch, has resigned from the Public Service. He was bidden farewell by members of the staff yesterday, a presentation being made by the Chief Postmaster (Mr D. R. Thomson). Mr Masters, a popular officer of the department, is wellknown as a, Rugby football player and administrator.

He joined the department at Seddon in 1914 and was stationed at Featherston Military Camp- Post Office for part of the war years. Later he was. transferred to Wellington, as a telegraphist, and then was shifted to Christchurch. In 1934 he was appointed commercial officer in Christchurch, and he took over the duties of superintendent of the telephone exchange in February of last year. ioS5 r o= M A^ w , as a member of the 1924-25 All Black Rugby team which toured Great Britain, and he has also been a selector of South Island and Canterbury Rugby teams.
