WHEAT HARVEST IN 1946-47
FLAT PRICE OP 8/FAVOURED
IMMEDIATE DECISION SOUGHT A price" of 8s a bushel for the 194647 wheat. harvest is considered* necessary by the board of directors of United Wheatgrowers to induce growers to plant the acreage required to supply the Dominion's needs. The board has decided to request the Minister for an immediate price announcement. .
The problem of paying a price on a sliding scale commencing with a pr'ce lower than 8s fbr 200,000 acres and rising under an acreage bonus system to more than 8s a bushel for 300,000 acres was discussed at the board's- meeting. The electoral committee, however, concluded that a flat price of 8s would be preferable, and the directors agreed to make the necessary recommendation to the Minister.
Consideration has also been given to increasing the cover provided <by the hail, frost and flood insurance scheme, and the wheat committee has been asked to indicate- what the position would be after an increase in the cover to farmers was given.
