CHRISTMAS PARTY

A RECORD SUCCESS "A real Christmas party," was the verdict of the 300 guests, who, last evening attended the Canterbury (N.Z.) Travel Club's annual eud-of-the-year gathering, held in the Wentworth Cabaret. Great interest was aroused by the fact that Sir Patrick Duff, High Commissioner in New Zealand for the United Kingdom, and Lady Cuff, had arrived in Christchurch by aeroplane earlier' in the day specially to attend the function. The president of the club. Sir Joseph Ward, and Lady Ward received the guests, and the club's honorary organiser, Mrs A. J. Benzie, and members of the executive and entertainment committees, ensured the smooth running of'all arrangements for the comfort and entertainment of mem-* bers =and their guests. An address given by Sir Patrick Duff on "Impressions of Canada," interested and pleased his large audience, on whose behalf the Mayor. Mr E. H. Andrews, expressed gratitude to him.

A musical programme of unusual merit was arranged by two members of the: club, Mesdames J. C. Cullman and C. Shaw, who also played the accompaniments. The artists were Mesdsmes W. D. Ledsham, C. Haase, and T. Christensen (the Windsor Trio), who sang three part-songs: Misses Margaret Hamilton and Helen Hodgins (songs), Mr Trevor Hutton (flute solos and obbligatos). and Messrs Robert Lake and Ernest Rogers (humorous duets). Gifts from an effectively decorated Christmas tree, were then distributed to lucky number holders by Mrs Harold Goggin and Mrs Gordon Gunn. who were responsible for organising that oleasjng cremonv. Then, while the lights of the hall were lowered, a party of carol singers carrying lanterns. sang three Christmas carols. After supper, a dance was held.
