IMPROVEMENT OF HARBOUR
ENGINEERS' REPORT RECEIVED
An extensive report covering proposals for the improvement of Lyttelton harbour was received by the Lyttelton Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday morning. Meeting first as a harbour improvement committee, the board decided that the contents of the report, in the meantime, should remain confidential, and that a special meeting be held to consider it. Members were asked to give the fullest consideration to the proposals, and to submit written particulars of any further information or explanation they might require at that meeting. Th-2 report was prepared by Messrs D. Holderness. superintending engineer of the Auckland Harbour Beard, Mr P. °W. Fryer, former engineer and now consulting engineer to the board, and Mr A. J. Charman, resident engineer. "As the report is before this meeting, it is unnecessary for me to add anything beyond stating that it is, in my opinion, a good report, to which I hope every v,member will give careful thought," said the chairman (Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon), when the board agreed to hold over discussion.
Later in the meeting it was agreed that the board should make a full-day inspection of the harbour early next year. . .
When a member inquired if the party would be confined to board members'and officers, Mr Mac Gibbon said that this would be a business trin to take in the scope of the proposed alterations. Later, however it would be yery desirable to invite representatives of local bodies to inspect the scheme.
"There will be no Saturday morning shopping, so you will all be free from your domestic duties," commented Mr Mac Gibbon. when it was decided that the inspection be made on a Saturday.
