Regret at the death of Mrs Rainey who had been one of the early presi°t JKr Southbrook-Flaxton branch of the Women's Division of the farmers' Union was expressed at a meeting of the North Canterbury provincial executive, held at Beath's yesterday morning. A vote of sympathy was passed with two other membersMrs Dulieu (Springston) and Mrs Milne (Fernside-Springbank), who recently suffered bereavements. An unusual presentation was made at a meeting of the North Canterbury provincial executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, held at Beath's yesterday. The provincial president, Mrs R. E. Waghorn, has been unsuccessful in her efforts to have a telephone installed at her home in Riccartpn, and her next-door neighbour, Mrs R. E. B. Smith, has for many months cheerfully taken and given urgent telephone messages for her. In appreciation of her kindness in this regard, the secretary of the executive. Mrs R. H. Howell, on behalf of members, yesterday presented Mrs Smith with a Christmas gift, More than 1500 garments, as well as 100 knitted garments, have been sent to the central depot in Cashel street this -year by the Sydenham sub-centre of the Red, Cross, which has helped with contributions to China, to the British Red Cross, UNRRA,.and in the sending of tinned food to Europe. The sub-centre also conducted a one-day shop, at which more than £SO was realised. This report was given at the last meeting of the sub-centre, when the committee thanked members for their support. His Lordship Bishop Lyons was thei guest of honour .at a very well attended Christmas party, given by members of the Catholic Women"s League, and held last evening at "Mary Knoll," Cashel street. In the absence of the president, Miss A. Buckley,' Mrs F. C. Delany presided, and, on behalf of the league, welcomed Bishop Lyons and the Very Rev. E. Finlay. She thanked members for their co-operation throughout the year, and outlined the various activities undertaken by the circles of the league. A programme, presented by the league's cultural and religious group, comprised an amusing one-act play, a oneact musical presentation, consisting of songs and choruses, and a presentation in dialogue and tableaux of the Coming of the Messiah. Bishop Lyons congratulated the league on the progress made during the year, and Father Finlay expressed the league's appreciation of 'the encouragement given members by Bishop Lyons. Miss Tully thanked the league for hospitality shown to girls from the training centre, who were specially invited to the party.

After an interval of some years, the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society decided this year to revive its earlier custom of holding a Christmas party, and the enthusiasm shown at the well, attended gathering held at the Winter uarden last evening proved that the decision was a popular one. In the absence of the president, Dr. J. Right, ufir T. W. C. Tothill presided and ,wel* corned members and friends. An entertaming programme was provided by the active members’ club, .as follows: ouidesque. orchestra, sketch in mime (Moyra Dean andVMv'Petrie), songs in costume (Marijean Edmonds, P. Donovan. an d G. Cameron, with Mrs Kenheth Ballantyne ■ •as accompanist), comedy sketches (Patricia Hill and Edith Woodward, and Florence Dalton Agnes Richardson, DOris Davies, Edna Of ell, R. Ashworth, and Gordon Wilson), ballet (Peggy Holmes, Dundas walker, and John Hendry). After the programme a dance was held. Mr Tothill, for the active members’ club, thanked Miss Edna Neville for the good work she had done for the club, end presented her with a gift from the members.

A warm tribute to the work of Mrs Henry Wyatt, who for the last 15 years has been honorary treasurer of the Parents' National Educational Union, was paid by the president, Mrs Norton Francis, at the annual meeting last night. Mrs Francis said that Mrs Wyatt s efficiency, loyalty, cheerfulness, and unselfishness had won the admira- ,« on and gratitude of all members. Mrs Wyatt was re-elected treasurer. The Sunlight League health camp committee gratefully acknowledges a gift of eggs for the "Glenelg" health camp' from the Papanui-Waimairi branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union.

Two New Zealand missionaries, Sister Kathleen Porter and Miss Marjorie Monaghan, recently released from internment in China, were yesterday welcomed home by a large gathering of missionary supporters at Church House, Cashel street. Sister Porter and Mis. Monaghan, who were interned in a prison camp in northern China, were among, the first to be released. They intend eventually to return to' theirwork- with the North China Mission. His Grace Archbishop West-Watson, who presided, spoke of the work done by the two missionaries during the time they were interned. They had cared for the sick and held classes for the younger jnternees in the camp. Miss Monaghan and Miss Porter spoke briefly •on their work and mentioned the enthusiastic reception which they had received from the Chinese on their release from internment. The spea*.ers were thanked by Canon Nelham Watson.
