Bookmakers Fined.—Bets taken on December 1 on races at Christchurch, Auckland, and Bulls resulted in J. B. Helm and George E. Morgan, who were both described as “small fry," appearing before Mr J. Miller, S.M., in t e Magistrate’s Court, Hastings, yesterday, when they pleaded guilty to carrying on business as bookmakers. Helm was fined £SO, and Morgan £7O. —(P.A.)
Supplies of lima and haricot beans have not been available in New Zealand for some years, but there was a possibility that some stocks might arrive next year, says a statement issued by the Economic Information Service. Everything depended on whether the Food Control authorities in London gave ■ New Zealand an allocation of dried beans for 1946.
A total of 1500 hand lawnmowers. the largest quantity made in New Zealand for a long time, was distributed throughout the country last month, says the Economic Information Service. As many as 600 lawnmowers a week would be available for civilian use early in the New Year.
