“MAADI GRAS”
NEW KIWI SHOW AT THEATRE ROYAL*
A review as fast and bright as “Maadi Gras,” the musical show being played by “The Kiwis” at the Theatre Royal this week, could not fail to be a success with Christchurch audiences. It is the latest of the non-stop variety entertainments designed originally to give soldiers on leave from the front as much fun and music as possible in the shortest time. In two and a half hours of this new show, they present selections of national songs, musical comedy items, sketches, and novel instrumental items featuring artists well known for their successes in the Middle East, and reinforcements of new talent from the forces in New Zealand. The Bth Army’s favourite female impersonators, Phil Jay and Wally Prictor, are as convincing as ever in their new songs and sketches, and they are ably supported by a brilliant newcomer to the show, John Hunter. “Maadi Gras” will be presented this evening and to-morrow evening.
High Prices For Grapes.—Hothouse grapes brought up to 13s a pound in the Christchurch fruit and produce markets yesterday. Very few grapes are coming into the markets, supplies being drawn mainly from two hothouses at Rangiora and Harewood.
