LAWN TENNIS

SENIOR GRADE ENTRIES The entry of a team by Cathedral in both the senior 'men's and the senior women's competitions was received by the competitions committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening, bringing the total entries up to 10 and six - teams respectively. The closing of had been postponed for a fortnight to enable efforts to be made to .secure a more even distribution of the leading players. The chairman (Mr W. A. Clothier) reported that the United Club, which already had supported the competitions well by entering three evenly-matched teams in the men's competition, had generously agreed to relinquish sufficient players to strengthen the one or two teams that were not up to senior standard. This would'result in an excellent competition and provide the best play for the greatest number of players. The entries were accepted with the proviso that Opawa should strengthen its team in the men's competition. The entries are as follows: Senior Men.—United (3), Elmwood (2), University, North Linwood, Opawa, Woolston, and Cathedral. Senior Women.—North Linwood, Elmwood, University, United, Woolston, and Cathedral. The men's matches will begin on November 17, and the women's on ' November 24, and the two competitions will be played on alternate weeks. It was decided to continue the competitions while the representative teams are absent, but if necessary to substitute a round of matches which would involve the least hardship to the teams affected. The entry- of additional teams in several grades having exceeded the capacity of the grass courts at Wilding Park, it was decided to accept the offer of the United Club to put two courts at the disposal of the association each Saturday, and to play one match in each round of the under 21 mixed grade on hard courts
