ATHLETICS

SECONDARY SCHOOLS' SPORTS DOCKERY AND WARREN BREAK RECORDS The Christchurch secondary schools' athletic sports at St. Andrew's College grounds yesterday provided close and interesting contests, and-outstanding runners were seen—A. F. Dockery, of Christchurch Boys' High School, and the St. Bede's College junior. R. F. Warren. The track was in capital order and all in favour of record breaking; but a strong, gusty wind hindered the runners in the distance events. • ■" . Christ's College fielded a strong team in the senior events, and scored 281 points, with Boys' High School and St. Andrew's in second place with 15 points. Boys' High School, with 17 points, won the intermediate grade from St. Bede's College, 11 points; and St. Bede's College won the junior championship with 141 points from Christ's College. 83 points. A feature of the day's sport was the splendid running of R. F. Warren in the junior division. In a hard gruelling race over 440 yards, he recorded 53 2-ssec, an improvement of 2 3-ssec on the previous record of 56sec, which had . been established in 1937 and equalled by him last year. This performance marked Warren as the greatest runner of his age to compete in secondary schools' competition. He did not make a very good beginning in the 100 yards, in which .he equalled the record of Usee he had made last year. He gave further evidence of his speed when in the junior relay he was left with several yards to make up in the last sprint over 110 yards. He had raced to the leaders at the end of 50 yards, and won by five yards. Warren, whose home is in Westport, is a well-grown boy, and has done comparatively little racing or training for one of his class. In the senior sprints, J. - J. Thomson narrowly defeated L. McDougall in the 220 yards, and the pair had another battle royal in the 100 yards, McDougall winning a great race by inches. The times, 23 4-ssec for the 220 and 10 4-ssec for the 100 yards have been beiten at some previous meetings. • A. F. Dockery was not troubled to win .the 880 yards in 2min 9sec and the 440 yards in 50 4-ssec, time that replaced the previous record of 51 2-ssec, made in 1937. Dockery won both his races by comfortable margins, and had he been pressed he would probably have done still better time. Dockery is a great runner who may do well in open company before the season is far advanced.

R. W. Gudgeon (Christ's College) gave a finished display to win the 120 yards hurdles iri 16 4-ssec. In the intermediate division, K. Beardsley (Technical College) won the 100 yards in 11 l-ssec, and fully extended R. Gaskill, of Boys' High- School, who won the 440 yards in 54sec. There was a keen struggle for victory in the junior high jump, in which four competitors cleared the 'bar at 4ft loin, but failed to improve on this performance.
