GRANT BY CARNEGIE CORPORATION

* CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LIBRARY

A grant of £ISOO a year, for three years, has been made by the Carnegie Corporation for the purchase of books for the Canterbury University College library, states “Canta,” the journal of the Canterbury College Students’ Union. The grant may be extended for the fourth and fifth years. The library would be able to purchase more standard reference books, and bibliographies, standard works on all non-technical subjects, back files of suitable journals, literature in foreign languages, and translations, English and American literature, music, art, and worth-while books in the sciences, the arts, and the social sciences. The grant had not been available before, it was stated, as the college deferred application partly in the hope that new buildings would make space available, and partly because more internal reorganisation was necessary than in North Island colleges. It was now felt that books could be absorbed at a greater rate. It is proposed to take over the draughting office of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and to keep there the less,frequently used books.
