RUSSIAN FOREIGN POLICY

EMPHASIS ON INTEREST IN DARDANELLES (Rec. 7 p.m.) PARIS, July 19, The Russian language newspaper, “Russian News,” which interprets the official Soviet viewpoint, says that Russia is at present primarily interested first in the Far East, second in the Near East, and third in international air transport. The newspaper says that in the Near East and the Persian Gulf, the interests of the British Empire and the Soviet must be adjusted. Russia must be able to send a fleet from one sea to another. It had always been difficult for her to accept that her action should be circumscribed by a decision Of a third Power to open or close the straits. The least Russia could expect to-day was to be able to navigate the Dardanelles without impediment, and to guard them with Turkey. Russia faced the problem of organising maritime bases for all her communication routes, added the newspaper.
